The Social Science Research Commons' physical facilities have reopened on a limited basis, by appointment only.
In line with campus guidance, we continue to encourage our staff, consultants, and social science community members to work remotely when possible, and continue to offer most of our services remotely. We're still reachable by email (ssrc@indiana.edu) and phone (812-855-6664).
If you do need to use one of the SSRC's research facilities in person, please send us an email to schedule an appointment.
More information about the requirements for using our facilities in person, and about our virtual services for Fall 2020, is included below.
Users are expected to monitor their health on a regular basis and to stay home and contact IU Health if they feel ill.
When using SSRC facilities, all users are expected to follow the following general protocols:
Wash hands thoroughly when entering and leaving Woodburn Hall. If the sinks are unavailable, use the hand sanitizer provided.
Wear masks unless working independently in a private space (e.g. as the only person within four walls and behind closed doors).
Maintain a six-foot distance from others.
Use paper towels or a disinfecting wipe to access the elevator and to open doors to offices, common spaces, and restrooms.
Thoroughly disinfect surfaces before and after use.
Comply with all COVID-19 safety signage.
Only one person at a time is allowed in the elevator.
Use common sense and patience to allow passing in hallways and on stairwells.
The SSRC is available to host meetings and other events that meet university-level requirements and guidelines. Our spaces can be reserved for up to 2 hours, with a minimum of 30 minutes' buffer between meetings. Our spaces have significantly lower maximum capacities under campus COVID-19 guidance:

All of our consulting partners continue to offer their services remotely. Some consultants may offer in-person services when necessary, by appointment. We will not be offering walk-in consulting services for Fall 2020.
New! Request a consultation using our intake form, and we'll match you up with the consultants that best fit your needs.
Our consulting partners include the Indiana Statistical Consulting Center, the Biostatistics Consulting Center, the Center for Survey Research, UITS Research Applications and Deep Learning, and OVPR Proposal Development Services. You can read more about our consultants here.
The lab space inside Woodburn Hall is available for use by approved researchers with a justified need on a limited, by-appointment basis only. We will not be providing daily use via key check-out from the SSRC front desk; all users will need to be approved for personal after-hours access. Users will also need to submit verification of their completion of the Community Responsibility Acknowledgment Form and/or Student Commitment Form in order to be approved to use the Qual Lab, and will only be able to use the lab space with an appointment due to new restrictions on the lab's maximum capacity.
For some researchers, we may be able to provide software access through a limited Virtual Qual Lab service. Please email ssrc@indiana.edu with any questions.
The Qualitative Data Analysis Laboratory is now prepared to check out equipment, and/or accept equipment returns, by appointment. To arrange to check out or return equipment, send us an email.
The Interdisciplinary Experimental Laboratory is available for use following the same policies as for other meetings or events. For conducting research within our facilities, researchers are additionally required to:
Provide confirmation that they have been approved to resume on-campus research (by the department chair, research supervisor, or other authority in line with campus guidance), via email to ielab@indiana.edu (for research using the IE Lab) or quallab@indiana.edu (for research using the Qual Lab).
Affirm via email that personnel using these spaces will be responsible for disinfecting equipment and surfaces before and after use.
The Kentucky Research Data Center is in Lexington, KY has reopened for approved researchers with new requirements and protocols. The KRDC's Administrator, Charles Hokayem, continues to support researchers' applications remotely; contact him by email. Likewise, the SSRC continues to provide assistance and to accept applications for KRDC grants to support research once the KRDC facility reopens to researchers.
Users with a justifiable need to use the SSRC for individual use--such as using specialized statistical software on our workstations--may be granted access. Users will first need to submit documentation that they have completed the Community Responsibility Acknowledgment Form and/or Student Commitment Form, and will need to coordinate with SSRC staff for an appointment. To get started, send us an email.
Virtual services
For Fall 2020, SSRC-sponsored events, such as the Workshop in Methods series, will be held virtually. More information will be posted soon.
We maintain the Social Science Community Calendar and use it to share information about social science events across campus, including virtual and in-person events. If you have an event you'd like to submit, suggest it to the "Social Science Community" calendar through the events.iu.edu system, or send us an email.

The Restricted-Access Data Remote Server (RADaRS) is currently available for current researchers and projects. Some data custodian services now require a little more advance notice or turnaround time. Email the RADaRS team or contact the SSRC by phone for more information or assistance.
Researchers are still able (and encouraged!) to access data resources from off-campus. If you have trouble accessing these resources, contact us for more assistance.
Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR): Off-campus access to download ICPSR data is available to IU affiliates, but users must first create an account through an IU internet connection, such as the IU VPN, and/or have logged in from an IU internet connection in the last six months.
With our physical facilities closed to walk-in traffic, we're relying more heavily on our website, social media, email, videoconferencing, and phone to keep in touch with social scientists.
