The number of children living with abuse or neglect in Monroe County has increased over the past few years because of the opioid crisis. From 2015 to 2016, the number of Monroe County children in need of services from the Department of Child Services increased by 87 percent — a spike from 201 to 376 in just one year, according to the Indiana Youth Institute's 2018 Kids Count Data Book.
